Accounting and Tax Obligations in Estonia
Every company established in Estonia—whether formed directly or remotely through e-Residency—has a set of statutory obligations it must meet. The main duties are a monthly VAT return (if you are VAT-registered), an annual report in every case, and payroll and social-security reporting where you employ staff. Even a dormant ("zero-activity") company must still file its annual report. Meeting these obligations accurately and on time keeps you compliant with the Estonian Tax and Customs Board (EMTA) and the Business Register, and helps you avoid late-filing penalties. As World Company Setup, our Tallinn office and multilingual team manage this entire cycle on your behalf.
The VAT Return Process in Estonia
The standard VAT rate in Estonia is 24%, with reduced rates of 13% and 9% applied to certain goods and services. You are required to register for VAT once your taxable turnover exceeds the EUR 40,000 threshold within a calendar year. The VAT taxable period is one calendar month, and the VAT return must be submitted electronically to EMTA by the 20th day of the month following the reporting period. We prepare your return, track the payment calendar and handle every step of the VAT registration process so nothing is missed.
Corporate Income Tax and Profit Distribution
Estonia’s corporate tax system is one of its biggest advantages: tax is charged when profits are distributed, not when they are earned. Retained (undistributed) profits are taxed at 0%, so companies can reinvest earnings and grow tax-free. Corporate income tax becomes due only when profit is distributed to shareholders as dividends, at a rate of 22% (calculated as 22/78 of the net distribution). This lets businesses fund expansion from their own capital and carry the tax burden only when they actually pay out profit. Our team supports you with corporate tax return preparation and efficient, fully compliant tax planning.
The Annual Report Requirement in Estonia
Every company registered in Estonia must submit its annual report to the e-Business Register within six months of the end of its financial year—for a calendar-year company, that means by 30 June. This obligation applies even if your company had no activity during the period. Late submission can lead to administrative sanctions and, ultimately, deletion from the register, so we monitor the deadline and prepare and file the report for you from start to finish.
The VAT and corporate tax rates above are current as of July 2026 and are subject to legislative change; we recommend confirming the latest figures on the official EMTA website. To set up your company first, see our guide to company formation in Estonia.
Accounting Service Prices in Estonia
Your accounting cost depends on your transaction volume, whether you are VAT-registered and whether you run payroll. To give you a general idea, the monthly fee ranges commonly seen in the market are shown below:
| Package | Scope | Estimated Monthly Fee |

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Accounting Service in Estonia frequently asked questions.
Is it mandatory to hire an accountant for my Estonian company?
Yes. All companies registered in Estonia must file an annual report with the Business Register, whether or not they are active. If you are VAT-registered, a monthly VAT return is added to this. Professional accounting support that is up to date with current legislation is therefore strongly recommended.
When is the VAT return filed in Estonia?
The VAT return is filed monthly and must be submitted electronically to EMTA by the 20th day of the month following the reporting period. If your annual turnover exceeds EUR 40,000, you are required to register for VAT.
If my company had no transactions (zero return), do I still file an annual report?
Yes. All Estonian companies, including dormant ones, must submit their annual report to the Business Register within six months of the end of the financial year.
How much does an accounting service in Estonia cost?
Fees depend on your transaction volume, VAT status and payroll needs. You can review the price ranges on this page for a general idea and contact us for a precise, tailored quote. The figures shown are current as of July 2026.
Do I pay tax if I do not distribute my profit in Estonia?
No. Estonia’s corporate tax system does not tax retained (undistributed) profits; tax arises only when profit is distributed to shareholders as dividends, at 22% (22/78 of the net amount). This lets businesses reinvest their profits tax-free.
Can I manage the accounting of my e-Residency company remotely?
Yes. Because e-Residency provides a digital signature, all your accounting and tax processes can be handled remotely. World Company Setup manages this for you through our Tallinn office and multilingual team.
Can I get support in my own language?
Yes. Our team communicates in Turkish, English and German and answers your questions about VAT returns, corporate tax and the annual report in your preferred language.
Do I also need to declare my Estonian tax obligations in my home country?
This depends on your country of residence and your company’s place of effective management. For an assessment specific to your situation, we recommend consulting a tax advisor and confirming the official sources.
What are my payroll obligations if I employ staff in Estonia?
If you employ staff in Estonia, you must file payroll, income tax and social security (social tax) declarations with EMTA on a monthly basis. These are due by the 10th of the month following the salary payment. World Company Setup handles the payroll calculation and all monthly filings on your behalf.
Are a contact person and legal address mandatory in Estonia?
For directors who do not reside in Estonia, the Commercial Code requires the company to have a contact person and a valid legal address in Estonia. World Company Setup also provides legal address and contact person services, covering this obligation for you.
